I'm a big fan usually, but this just left me cold. A quirky story about a young girl, Dhikilo, and her adventures into the fantasy world of Liminus. Dhikilo must venture into another world to rescue the Ds, stepping through a magic door to do so; there are loud and somewhat clanging echoes both of Narnia and Oz. Just a few chapters in, something extremely odd begins to happen to language. I had originally assumed this was an adult book but it soon became clear that it was better suited to children. Enough layers there. Dhikilo encounters prejudice and oppression, both of which she escapes in a not entirely convincing manner, completing her mission at no real cost to herself. It does remind me of Narnia when the children walk through the wardrobe, and when Lyra and Will walk through world's in His Dark Materials - as this is a short fable we barely get to explore Liminus. Its celebration of moral courage and freethinking is a powerful reminder of our human capacity for strength, hope and justice. The ‘wooden furniture polished so thoroughly it shone like syrup’ conjures up the opulent setting of the tricksy hotel Bleak House in the fantasy world of Gampalonia. I hated all the various tribes of people Dhikilo meets - they all felt cliched and pointless. The driving force of the plot was weak and felt pointless for the most part, none of the characters stood out, and the latter third or so with the Gamp seemed like a poorly-disguised Trump imitation, which pull. Strong elements of Dickens and Lewis in this fable filled with a cast of fabulous characters investigating the disappearance from our world of the letter D. A story that will be found and enjoyed and dreamed about for years to come. The fairy-tale feeling overall was comforting and cleverly recreated for a contemporary audience but while I enjoyed this part, the construction of the story was a little too episodic for me which made the pace a little plodding and repetitive.

Already something of an outsider with few real memories of her real parents, casualties of war, she is the only person unaffected by the sudden disappearance of the letter D. She is the only person who remembers that there is one, and the only person still using it. The letter D starts disappearing, and then all things starting with a D start disappearing… someone has to set things right, but the rest of the world just seems to accept having to miss the D… What a great plot for a story. I did like the Bleak House Hotel section, and thought that could have made for a really interesting couple of chapters, rather than the small section that we actually get. i did enjoy!
